PRAYAGRAJ: At a time when the countrymen are in an upbeat mood after first five of 36 Rafale fighter been inducted in the Indian Air Force (IAF) and government would soon place the order for 83 Tejas Mark 1A fighters, the Sangam city too would contribute in making of this upgraded version of the indigenously made fighters.
Loom for light combat aircraft (LCA) Tejas Mark 1A would be made by Naini Aerospace Limited of the Prayagraj. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has entrusted the task of making looms of light combat aircraft to this company which has been making looms for Tejas and Dhurv multirole choppers. HAL would be assigned the task of building 83 fighter aircraft that would play a key role in the guarding of the Indian frontier. These would be an upgraded version of Tejas 1.
Aircraft and helicopters have a bunch of thin cables going to several parts of the machine and used for passing electronic signal and other command. This bunch of cables is called a loom.
On Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the Tejas 1A fighter aircraft would become part of the IAF fleet. After the announcement, the exercise of making fighter aircraft has been expedited.
“Tejas 1A fighter aircraft would represent self-sufficient India. The light combat aircraft will be completely indigenous and the factory has started preparations for making looms of new fighter jets of Tejas series”, said chief executive officer (CEO) of Naini Aerospace Limited, Rajinikanth Mishra.
Before Tejas 1A, Naini Aeronautics Limited has been making loom for the first Tejas LCA and Dhruv helicopter since December 2017 and July 2017, respectively.
The Ministry of Defence acquired Hindustan Cables Limited and named it Naini Aerospace Limited. After becoming a unit of the Ministry of Defense, some of the vital parts of the Dhruv helicopter was built in Naini’s factory.
Apart from contributing to making of Tejas MK 1A, this company would soon be making looms for the launch vehicles used by ISRO to launch and place in orbit different satellites.
“The team of ISRO had visited and audited our facility in November-December 2019 and were satisfied with the infrastructure and potential we have and soon we would be making loom for launch vehicles for ISRO too”, said Mishra. Had it not been the outbreak of the corona, the work of making looms for ISRO would have started.
According to HAL, the first Tejas Mk.1A will fly by 2022 with serial production starting in 2023. The first squadron of Tejas Mk.1A will be delivered by 2025 and delivery of all 83 aircraft is to be completed before 2029.
